Advanced Memorization Techniques for GRE Vocabulary - QMP Education

Updated: May 28, 2024

Introduction

The GRE's Verbal Reasoning section tests your command over a complex vocabulary that often includes challenging words such as "macerate," "recalcitrant," and "pusillanimous." To effectively tackle this challenge, QMP Education has developed its own version of the Substitute Word Method, a strategic approach designed to make learning these daunting words manageable and efficient. You can see our full list of our words on our GRE Vocab app.

Substitute Word Method

This method simplifies the memorization process through a clear, structured approach that breaks down vocabulary learning into five essential steps:

  1. Original Word: Start by clearly identifying the GRE vocabulary word.

  2. Definition: Understand and memorize the word’s exact meaning using a long definition (5+ words), and a short definition (1 - 3 words).

  3. Substitute Word: Find a simpler word or phrase that sounds similar to the Original word; this will serve as your mnemonic aid.

  4. Connection: Establish a logical link between the substitute word and the original word’s definition.

  5. Memorable Image: Create a vivid, memorable image that connects the substitute word to the GRE word in a meaningful way.

Example in Detail

For instance, consider the word "aberration":

  1. Original Word: "Aberration"

  2. Definition: Deviation from what is typical or expected; unusual occurrence.

  3. Substitute Word: "A bear ration"

  4. Connection: Think of bears with small rations puzzled by one with much more food

  5. Memorable Image:

Spaced Repetition

Spaced repetition is a learning technique that increases the intervals of time between reviews of previously learned material. The QMP vocab learning app utilizes this method by presenting you with vocabulary words at strategically timed intervals to optimize memory retention. Here’s how it works:

  • Initial Learning: When you first encounter a new word, the app introduces it with its definition and uses.

  • Review Cycles: If you struggle with the word, the app shows it more frequently until your understanding improves. Conversely, words you master quickly appear less often, maximizing your study efficiency.

  • Long-Term Memory: This method helps transition vocabulary from short-term to long-term memory, ensuring you remember them well beyond your test date.

Active Application

To cement your vocabulary knowledge, apply these words in realistic GRE reading comprehension questions. This practice helps you:

  • Understand Context: See how these words are used in actual GRE-like texts.

  • Reinforce Learning: Apply the words in context, which reinforces their meaning and your ability to use them correctly during the exam.

  • Test Preparedness: Regular practice with real GRE questions ensures you’re not just memorizing words, but also understanding their nuances and applications.

Conclusion

At QMP Education, we believe that mastering the GRE vocabulary involves not only learning words but also applying and retaining them through strategic techniques. The Substitute Word Method, combined with spaced repetition in the QMP vocab learning app and active application through GRE practice, provides a holistic approach to vocabulary mastery.
